Meet the Swimmers – Amy

WHO ARE YOU?

Amy Nancollis.
I’m a private chef that runs cookery courses for people who love food, whilst supporting the Foodbank. I also cook fine dining dinner parties in peoples homes, meaning they get to be guests at their own party. I love eating out and open water swimming.

WHERE HAVE YOU TRAVELLED FROM?

Milton area of weston. I usually drive to my sisters, Highbury Rd, and walk to the lake.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE LAKE?

I used to swim in the lake before the lake was cleaned up.

WHAT SORT OF A SWIMMER ARE YOU?

I’ve always swam in the sea, I was born in Weston-super-Mare. I started swimming regularly in September 2019 and it became my saviour in 2020. I love a good proper swim, head down front crawl! I’ve used the lake and tide to train for my English Channel relay swim in July 2021. And have other swim events planned this year and next, so continue to train in both. I also love dipping and chatting and eating cake with the friends I’ve made from swimming in Weston. My 2 boys, 5&8 love to swim in the sea too. I see swimming being part of my regular fitness routine all year round, both in the pool and open water, especially now the lake is so accessible.

ARE YOU A JOINER?

I’m part of the mudlarks and supermares dipping Facebook pages. I hope to join the masters swimming club in September too.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES HAVING THE LAKE OPEN MAKE TO YOU?

A massive difference. I’d usually drive to Clevedon lake for a swim or have to work around the tides, meaning sometimes I wouldn’t swim for a week at a time, with the lake, it’s open 24/7 and always full. I feel extremely grateful it’s here.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO TELL US?

Thank you for all the hard work the volunteers have undergone in getting the lake open and for the continued work they are doing for the lake. Without them, the lake would not be open for us all to use. In my opinion you are all superstars.
