Dredging News

We’re delighted to announce that some dredging will take place next week to create a deep water swimming channel across the width of the lake 🙌🏊‍♀️

This has been made possible thanks to the social value commitment within North Somerset Council‘s contract with Weston-based EJ McGrath Construction Ltd for the Improving Weston project.

Huge thanks to the council’s seafront team Weston Seafront for supporting us with this. They’ve organised the necessary dredging surveys (before and after the work is carried out).

The council has also funded a dredging consultant to complete the required paperwork as part of the Marine Maritime Organisation (MMO) licence which has approved for silt to be removed from the lake.

The work will take place from Thursday 23 April to Monday 27 April.

The work will be carried out by MJV Marsh Plant Hire, the same company used by MARLENS at Clevedon Marine Lake.

We’re waiting for confirmation on when the rest of the council’s improvement project work will be completed. We’ll announce when the lake will re-open once a date has been agreed.

It’s great to see some dredging taking place although (sorry to be negative) but I would have thought a complete dredging of the lake was the prime priority for using the allocated money as it makes a huge difference when swimming at the lake, I personally love to swim from the beach to the causeway, it’s such a pity there can’t be a permanent dredging machine on the knightstone to keep the lake mud free as much as possible, this was sadly taken away many years ago but is essential to keep the lake a nice place to swim for all abilities,, as it silts up extremely quickly and becomes very unpleasant to swim in. Hi Neil,
The money from the levelling up fund could not be used for dredging, it had to be used for the work completed on improving the apron and access to the lake. There were no funds that could be applied for a full dredge of the lake.
We are hoping that going forward we will be able to use the digger again, as this has proven very successful at Clevedon Marine Lake.
